Jerry Seinfeld And His Sleek VW Karmann Ghia

In episode 5 of Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee, Jerry drives Joel Hodgson around in a sea blue 1963 VW Karmann Ghia. The car is powered by a four-cylinder engine from the Porsche 912, and like any VW of the 60’s, the engine in mounted in the rear. Seinfeld notes that the suspension, and brakes are also from a Porsche 912. The Karmann Ghia was a sports car for the hip guy who wanted a dash of performance to go with charming VW style.

In an effort to create a more substantive car than the VW Beetle, the Karmann Ghia was designed to appeal to those with a higher standard of living than that of Beetle owners. Unlike the Beetle, the body panels on the Karmann Ghia were hand produced by German coach building firm – Karmann. The design of the car, inspired in part by Studebakers of the 1950’s, was done by Italian design firm Ghia.

In episode 6, airing tomorrow August 30, Jerry talks to Bob Einstein – of Curb Your Enthusiasm fame – in what appears to be a 60’s era Mercedes-Benz 300SE.
